What is an inkassovarsel?

A debt collection notice tells you that an unpaid claim goes to collection unless it is paid. It is not the same as a reminder, and it is not a claim from the enforcement officer. The notice is a step on the way there.

Debt Collection Act § 9

The deadline must be at least 14 days

Section 9 of the Norwegian Debt Collection Act is titled «Collection notice and payment deadline». It states that the payment deadline must be at least 14 days, counted from when the notice was sent. A shorter deadline in the letter is shorter than the law requires.

Debt Collection Regulation

The fee has a ceiling

Reminder and collection-notice fees are capped at one twentieth of the collection rate. The rate for 2026 is NOK 750, giving a ceiling of NOK 38 per notice. Amounts above that have no basis in the regulation.

Late Payment Interest Act

Late-payment interest is set twice a year

The rate is the central bank policy rate plus at least eight percentage points, set every six months. For the second half of 2026 it is 12.25 per cent a year. It runs from the due date, not from the notice.

If the deadline passes without payment or dispute, the case can be sent to collection, and a collection fee is added. Where the claim is disputed, separate rules govern what may be charged.
